Good Morning Parents and Students!

This week we will be learning about important figures during the American Civil War. Each day we will be covering a new person and the impact that they had on the war and the future. Throughout the week, we will be creating a flip book that will hold information about each figure from the Civil War. The students will be turning it in at the end of the week for a quiz grade to make sure that they were paying attention.

On Monday we will be discussing Clara Barton and her impact on nursing during wartime. Here is a video from actress Mary Ann Jung who portrays Clara Barton talking about her time in the war. In class we will be talking more about her impact on being in the battlefield and the creation of the American Red Cross. Students will get to try wrapping their own wounds and will put together a solution as to how to get supplies from towns that are far away from the battlefield. We will also be comparing her to the lives of women who stayed at home. Here is a link to help with explaining what we will be talking about home life during the American Civil War.

On Tuesday we will be talking about dogs during the Civil War most importantly, Sallie Ann Jarrett. She was the mascot of the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry. Her impact on the war will be forever commemorated due to her monument in Gettysburg. This website contains information about Sallie that I will be sharing with in class. If there is time on Tuesday, I will also be covering other dogs during the Civil War that are mentioned in the blog.

On Wednesday, we will be watching selections about Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, Joshua Chamberlain, and General Robert E. Lee from the Movie “Gods and Generals”. Your students brought home the permission slip to watch this last week. If you have not seen it or turned it in, please contact me and I will send another one home or you may print one at home with downloading the file from here. If you wish for your student to not watch the movie, please contact me and I will work something out and provide them with an alternate assignment. Here is some basic information about the book which was adapted into the movie.

On Thursday, we will be discussing Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. This topic is going to be a big topic with the slave treatment and why the slaves wanted to escape. However, as a class before starting the American Civil War we discussed the issue of slavery and how slavery started. This game will help students understand the perspective of what it was like to be a slave.

On Friday, we will be wrapping up our week with starting to cover the assassination of President Lincoln and our person will be John Wilkes Booth. We will be discussing his plan to kill President Lincoln and his life prior to him walking into Ford’s Theater. The website here will give the basic information about Mr. Booth including what happens to him after the assassination. Please feel free to have your students take a look.

Please be advised that the booklets we start on Monday will be collected the following Monday for a grade. If your child has any missing information, these websites should help. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me and I will be happy to answer them!

Enjoy your restful weekend and I’ll see everyone on Monday!
