Meet Sarah

Sarah is a 21 year old honors student at Holy Family University with a passion for helping teachers use 21st century learning in their classrooms. Also she wants to make students, teachers, and parents aware of the dangers of cyberbullying. She is currently going to school for Secondary Education in Social Studies and hopes to one day teach 7th or 8th grade.

Since birth, Sarah has had a passion for the Civil War and as she grew her passion for history and technology grew with her. She has known ever since she was a little girl that she has wanted to teach History.

Hoping to combine her love for the Civil War and her passion of technology with teachers and students she created Civil War Sallie.  Sallie is an educational “Follow Me Project” based on the concept of Flat Stanley but integrates Web 2.0 tools.  Sarah and Sallie won the 2009 Pennsylvania Middle School Computer and the 2009 EDUBLOGS Best Student Blog Awards.  Sarah and Sallie would soon become famous in the world of educational technology and would be featured in various newspapers, magazines and blogs.  This project also provided Sarah with the opportunity to present to teachers on a local, state and national level.

Starting at age 10, she delivered her  first presentation on Civil War Sallie and integrating technology into the classroom at the Pennsylvania Educational Technology Expo and Conference.  Since then she has spoken at the local, state and national levels. Some of the conferences she has presented at include:

  • ISTE
  • PETE&C
  • Middle States Council for the Social Studies
  • Civil War Preservation Trust
  • K-12 Online Conference
  • Intel Teachers Webinar
  • Three Rivers Educational Technology Conference
  • Diocese of Harrisburg Educators Conference

Along the way she has also learned the pitfalls of technology, including the stigma of being cyberbullied.  After being cyberbullied by classmates who were jealous of her successes, Sarah took on the task of making students and teachers aware of the issue of cyberbullying.  She is now teaching them how to  look for warning signs of cyberbullying.  She is also teaching parents the importance of knowing how to connect with the technology of the 21st century their  kids are using. Her goal is to graduate from Holy Family University in 2020 with her degree in Secondary Education in History.
